Our Mission

Here at LEDbetter, we create the community-led conditions for systemic change, beginning with public education.

Our Vision

Every child in the United States can attend a high quality school within their community, where the community’s voice and agency ensure that students’ needs drive school design, curriculum, policies, and instruction so that each child can achieve their aspirations, while the community builds cultural, economic, and social wealth through their advocacy and actions.

Why We Do It

We regard public education in all of its forms as the greatest equalizer, lever, and driver to elevating communities and enriching lives.  And we believe that communities have untapped power that needs to be restored.

How We Do It

We create leaders at every junction of public education, from the educators that found, lead, and teach at schools to the students, families, and communities that rely upon them. We help them understand the systems they live and work in, and give them tools to change it from within, in turn giving them ownership of those systems.

Our leaders lead better because they realize the full power of their agency by living and breathing the four core values central to systemic change. Our educators and end users are:

What We Do

LEDbetter addresses the issues while building

  • Programs for educators and end users to build their agency

  • Coaching and direct supports to create new schools and transform existing ones into ones that [serve] the community

  • Operates community-built spaces including blogs, forums, and learning platforms to share local voice, knowledge, and expertise [that restores power to the community]

  • Data and content to help community members develop narratives and campaigns to strengthen their community

  • They rely upon data that are true and representative proof points of the state of their education, and use them to make informed decisions about school design, instructional approach, and advocacy campaigns. Where data does not exist, they find it and share it with the community.

  • They ensure representative authenticity in their community voice, both in structure and strategy. In structure, they intentionally create inclusive spaces from which to grow, learn, hold each other accountable, plan, and execute their work in supportively honest ways. In strategy, they prioritize, through deliberate anti-racist approaches, unleashing the agency of our least privileged voices.

  • They compassionately meet their teachers and end users where they are and with the use of data, voice, and equity, they then design supports and solutions that nimbly respond to those needs as well as unleash their agency to rebuild community-led schools and systems.

  • Knowing that end users are the source of both demand and solutions for the community, they create institutional memory and a knowledge base among end users that raises the bar for districts to authentically represent them. They work egolessly with others to share and amplify intelligence. They create permanent movements through relentless sharing of data, narrative, optimism, and energy.
