Communities
LEDbetter believes in the community’s power to transform where they live and make systems that govern their lives their own. By sharing local voices, knowledge, and expertise, LEDbetter unleashes the individual and collective power within each community and directs it towards systemic change. We provide data and content to help community members develop narratives and campaigns to strengthen their community on our blogs, forums and learning platforms.
Impact
The Opportunity Ticket: What if we guaranteed families at closing schools that they could get into better schools? Read about our partnership with The Oakland REACH that resulted in a district policy that benefits historically marginalized students.
A-G Awards: Black and Brown students in California are graduating high school ineligible to even apply to the state university systems because they haven’t passed core class requirements. Read about our partnership with Families in Action (FIA) to celebrate Oakland high schools that are preparing over 80%+ of their African American and Latinx students to be ready to apply to college.
Internet for All: During the pandemic, students in communities of color found themselves parked in benches outside of fast food chains and coffee shops trying to access the internet on their phones to complete their school work. Our analysis revealed rampant digital redlining in Oakland and nationwide, where fiber and high speed internet were being routed around needy communities and towards affluent neighborhoods. Our advocacy efforts to secure internet as a public right held internet service providers accountable during the worst of the pandemic, a nationwide petition, and ultimately with the efforts of a coalition of advocates, the Affordable Connectivity Program.

The State of Black Education in Oakland develops events that focus on inclusion, collective conversation, and community engagement related to the state of education for Oakland’s Black community
We identify and lift up the voices and experiences of students, parents, educators, and community organizations because they are the critical stakeholders in the education system. We look to create a safe and equitable space for dialogue that recognizes that students, parents, educators, community organizations, and politicians are equal partners.

Great School Voices
Inequity is the hallmark of American education. We give students, families and the community a platform to share what is and isn’t working in our public schools and we advocate for educational equity. By shining a light on our public education system and giving a platform to historically underserved voices, communities can advocate for improved learning conditions for all students. LEDbetter produces the destination website Great School Voices for local and national education news and commentary, featuring unique voices and perspectives of real parents, students and community members.
Great School Voices is a blog that focuses on quality and equality in education, with a focus on Oakland.
