OPERATIONS SPOTLIGHT | Net Neutrality E-Rate Implications

CALL TO ACTION!!!

E-rate Application Season is Well Underway

For those unfamiliar, the federal E-rate program offers schools and districts with high percentages of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch up to 90% discounts on internet services and up to 85% discounts on IT network upgrades and maintenance. The latter is subject to a per-student cap over five years. The 2025–26 school year marks the final year of the current E-rate cycle, making this a "use it or lose it" opportunity for funding.

However, the repeal of net neutrality could profoundly impact the E-Rate program, undermining its ability to ensure equitable access to high-speed internet. Key concerns include:

  • Increased Costs for Schools and Libraries: ISPs may adopt tiered pricing, charging more for premium speeds or prioritization. This could force schools and libraries to divert limited budgets from educational tools to basic connectivity.

  • Prioritization of Commercial Content: ISPs might prioritize large, commercial platforms over free or low-cost educational resources, reducing access to the materials schools and libraries rely on for teaching and learning.

  • Worsening the Digital Divide: E-Rate is crucial for bridging the gap in underserved communities, particularly in low-income and rural areas. Without net neutrality, ISPs may deprioritize infrastructure investments in these regions, making universal, high-speed internet even harder to achieve.

  • Reduced Effectiveness of Subsidies: If ISPs raise prices for premium services, E-rate subsidies may no longer cover sufficient costs, leaving many institutions struggling to maintain adequate connectivity.

  • Challenges for Remote and Hybrid Learning: Remote learning requires robust internet access. Bandwidth-intensive tools like video conferencing or online platforms could face slower speeds or higher costs, disrupting students’ education.

  • Policy and Funding Gaps: E-Rate relies on stable federal policies to promote affordable broadband access. Regulatory uncertainty following the repeal of net neutrality complicates fund allocation and weakens the program’s impact.

At LEDBetter, we have a 100% success rate, having secured over $3 million in E-rate funding for our members. Our service charges are capped at the amount of funds you use, ensuring affordability and value.

If interested, reach out to us by telling us your needs or scheduling a virtual meeting with us today. While the deadline to begin your application is February, starting early is highly recommended to maximize your chances of success.
